9/13/2023 0 Comments N in bubble letters![]() SIR – Robin Aitken ( Comment, June 13, .uk) says I am “deluded” for calling for a public debate about the rules governing broadcast news in this country – rules that are meant to prevent what we have seen in America, where Fox News had to pay out more than $600 million to settle a libel case after admitting that it continued to broadcast what it knew to be lies about the presidential election. The literature of the piano is richer and more exciting because of Liszt’s contribution, however, and I have a feeling we’ll look back on the Boris years as full-feature Technicolor compared with the monochrome that awaits us under Sir Keir Starmer. ![]() Liszt embodied Romanticism in all its magnificence and folly, and Boris somehow went from the triumph of a landslide to a rather undignified exit. SIR – Having recently attended a course on 19th-century piano music, I am struck by the similarities between Boris and the composer Franz Liszt – both showmen, capable of bombast, who divided public opinion. The manner of Mr Johnson’s resignation merely confirms his arrogance and narcissism – qualities he appears to share with many other MPs. SIR – During my 40 years as an infantry officer I’ve come across many Boris Johnson types, both military and civilian, who used jovial charisma to conceal the truth that they were incompetent, self-centred blusterers. These were men and women who had been in contact with him. SIR – Dr Daphne Pearson ( Letters, June 12) may rate leadership qualities above morals when judging Mr Johnson, but she seems to overlook the fact that 60 ministers in his government resigned to precipitate his ousting. These voters are now not only to be punished as their communities decline, but they are also to be effectively disfranchised. SIR – As the Blob sees off Boris Johnson ( Letters, June 13) and the fight to recover Brexit looks ever more futile, the underlying story is the contempt in which Red Wall voters are held. SIR – If Mr Hunt really wants to improve public-sector productivity, he must get staff back into the office.Īs a recent local councillor, I can attest to the delays that occur when emails are exchanged and Zoom meetings arranged to accomplish tasks that, pre-pandemic, would have required no more than a 15-minute meeting between colleagues. The Tories seem more interested in being in power than in using their majority to make Britain a better place to live and work. Public services are no longer fit for purpose at either the local or national level. I voted Conservative in 2010 in the hope that the party would do this. SIR – Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, is to look at ways of making the public sector more productive ( report, June 13).
